The Red Queen hypothesis (also referred to as Red Queen's, the Red Queen effect, Red Queen's race, Red Queen dynamics) is an evolutionary hypothesis which proposes that species must constantly adapt, evolve, and proliferate in order to survive while pitted against ever-evolving opposing species.

Throughout Red Queen, Mare Barrow often feels backed into a corner, forced to lie to her family and others. Because Alice is a White Pawn, you might expect her to regard the Red Queen as an enemy. But although the Red Queen can be bossy, she actually gives Alice a lot of helpful advice and arranges for Alice to take part in the game.
